INTRODUCTION
Inventory and warehousing are critical functions in the supply chain, requiring the effective and efficient operation and management of all kinds of materials inbound, outbound, work in progress, storage and other services geared towards meeting both internal and external customers’ needs.
Problem Areas
The common problems pervading many organizations engaged in inventory and warehouse services have been traced to lack or poor system analysis and design, resulting to over or under stocking, poor inventory control and warehouse operation and high level of obsolescence material in the warehouse. Others are lack of appropriate software or the knowledge thereof to manage inventory, poor/incorrect labelling, stacking and poor handling system. The outcomes of the above are waste of human efforts, financial losses, time wasting, spatial mismanagement, unwarranted incidences, and low productivity.
The challenges also faced by organizations on the side of warehousing are essentially poor layout and design, inappropriate storage facilities including equipment and plants. With the aforementioned problems in place, materials flow are impaired, accidents becomes rampant, security and safety of personnel, including the inventories in the warehouse are subjected to unfavourable conditions.

At the end of the practical learning, participants will have key competencies in the following areas:

- Types of inventory, characteristics, classification;
- planning and management, Stock control methods, storage and stacking of items;
- Managing inventory flow: manual and computerized;
- Inventory forecasting, cycle count, tracking and reconciliation of inventory shrinkage;
- Inventory costs, stock evaluation and performance management;
- The Business Case
SECTION B: WAREHOUSE PRACTICE.
At the end of the practical learning, participants will have key competencies in the following areas:
Warehouse Layout and Design: U shaped, I shaped & L shaped layout;
- Warehouse Operation: Item identification, goods receipt & issuance, storage, order picking, sorting & packing, weighing equipment calibration, dispensing, replenishment, retrieval of materials, handling of obsolete and rejected items; etc.
- Warehouse Management: Handling information & documentation, examining orders, stock location records, checking & updating inventory, requisitioning supplies from stock, preparing delivery schedules, compiling data for production schedules, confirming completion of orders;
- Warehouse Finance and Account
- Warehouse Standards: Public Policy and Regulation, material handling: spacing, storage, dispensing, dispatching, disposal, equipment handling; site & perimeter, pest control, safety and security; etc.
